After five years of working as an engineer, Nurul Helwa Zakaria has chosen to be an active painter.
The decision was taken as she lacked the basic knowledge and exposure in the field.
According to Nurul Helwa, abstract paintings are her favourite and they are produced by inspiration from the surrounding scenery.
Apart from sketching on canvas, Nurul Helwa also makes Instagram as a platform for sharing pictures of her drawings that has its own message.
As a new painter, she needs to be wise in looking for opportunities, so participation in art exhibitions are one of the ways to introduce her work to visitors and art lovers.
Participation in exhibitions are also a platform for her to engage with more senior and experienced painters.
“Last year, I participated in six exhibitions beginning with Art Market Malaysia at One Utama Shopping Centre in August and IM4U Art in December.
“It continued in March this year at the MATRADE Exhibition and Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur, MATMEE-PERUPA at KL Gateway Mall, IMAGO Mundi, Jakarta, Indonesia and then onward to Victoria, Melbourne, Australia.
“The satisfaction is not only because I can participate in exhibitions with artists from diverse backgrounds, but visitors can also come and take a close look at my work,” she said.
Nurul Helwa who also has an online business, has a deep interest in painting and spends most of her time doing it using acrylic paint as the main medium.
Her love for painting has paid off as more and more people are beginning to show interest and appreciate artworks produced by artists. She has even sold one of her paintings for RM8,000.
She believes this field has its own future but artists need to have the desire to learn and not give up too quickly. Nurul Helwa is now gathering experience and hopes to have the opportunity of opening her own gallery one day. – Harian Metro
