Malaysia’s First Green Nanotechnology Cosmetic Products

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), through its downstream firm, Siti Hamidah Exclusive Empire Sdn Bhd (SHE Empire), has produced the country’s first cosmetic products based on green nanotechnology, Naturel Kiss Micellar Series.

UTM Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering Lecturer and Researcher, Associate Prof Dr Siti Hamidah Mohd Setapar, said the skincare products, under her Naturel Kiss cosmetics range, were produced with seven research teams using 99 percent natural ingredients imported from Japan.

“High-quality ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, bee venom, rose hydrosol and natural plant oils used (in the Micellar Series) can be anti-ageing agents, apart from making the skin firmer and the face fair and glowing.

“The use of micellar technology also helps to boost the effectiveness of facial cleansing and make-up removal up to five times compared with normal washing,” Siti Hamidah, who is also SHE Empire Managing Director, told Front Desk after launching the product at UTM.

She said her research and development activities on the micellar technology products spanned 15 years before successfully producing the Micellar Series that comprised two products, Micellar Cleanser and Micellar Energy Mist.

“We are targeting to sell 5,000 Micellar Series products in two months. These products have been made available to the market via our agents two days ago,” she added.

According to her, the idea to come up with the products was sparked after the market was flooded with cleanser and toner products that were often imported and used synthetic ingredients, which the public, especially women, should be made aware of.

“Many women are exposed to cosmetic products that are not as safe,  partly due to Malaysia being left behind in the advancement of cosmetics-related technology. Women are also exposed to the risks of heart and kidney diseases due to the toxins used in these products,” she said.

Siti Hamidah said the two-year-old Naturel Kiss range has penetrated both local and international markets and to-date has nearly 100 agents nationwide including Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei.

“SHE Empire has produced 12 cosmetic products, including the Micellar Series, which are being sold at reasonable prices that do not exceed RM100 each, although the quality is comparable with international brands that use advanced technologies,” she added.
