Activities For The Long Weekend

Carcosa Seri Negara Exhibition

Place: Carcosa Seri Negara
Date: Sept 1 – Sept 30

In celebration for Hari Merdeka, Carcosa Seri Negara has set up a month-long “Jalan Merdeka: traversing the routes to Merdeka” exhibition. This exhibition features untold stories that made Malaysia what it is today curated by a team of historians, activists and filmmakers, as well as an architect and a musician. It will deliver a cohesive multimedia story of Merdeka, not just from the perspective of the political elites, but also from ordinary people, trade unions and labour movements. Many historical events relating to Merdeka had taken place at Seri Negara, which used to be called King’s House.

Walking tour panel discussions, movie and documentary screenings, music and dance events, as well as colouring competitions for children are some of the activities lined up.

Multimedia Investigative Reporting in Mainstream Media by R.AGE

Place: PJ Live Arts
Date: Sept 3 2017
Time: 11 AM – 12:30 PM
Admission: RM10

Recently The Star ran a story of unfortunate Bangladeshi students hoping to elevate their lives by studying in Malaysia, but was deceived by college agents that forced them to work for cheap labor. Have you ever wondered what kind of research that goes behind exposing these crimes?

This workshop will be facilitated by a group of dynamic young people who have dedicated their passion, time and energy to tell stories that make a difference, hold people accountable and give a voice to those who do not have one. This describes the R.AGE team who will share with us how they propose and craft their stories, work through the politics, get them approved and support the stories with actionable campaigns.  Be part of this workshop to learn the tricks of the trade of an investigative journalist and hear first-hand stories based on their experiences.

Even if you’re not interested in this workshop Freedom Film Fest 2017 will hold screenings of documentaries at RM10 per session. Visit https://freedomfilm.my/ to find out more.

Discover Community Libraries

Place:

Little Giraffe Library – 114, Jalan 15, Batu 11, Cheras.
Booku – 24, Jalan Sepakat 9, Taman United, Kuala Lumpur.
Rumah Attap – 84c, Jalan Rotan, Off Jalan Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur.

It may be arguable that the best things in life are free, but this is starting to ring true, at least when it comes to books, with the mushrooming private-run libraries in the Klang Valley, offering everyone books and spaces for free. The people who made this happen do not mind putting in time and money on a long-term basis, with the intention of serving the community they are in. In addition to addressing the absence of a reading habit in our society, they create a space close to the hearts of many and mobilise like-minded people to better society. And, these libraries are located in interesting and unexpected places. So for those who are looking to spend some quite time alone for the long weekend, be sure to check these places out!
